Subsection STROKE

Minutes of the Stroke Subsection of the
Indian Academy of Neurology held on October 24, 2008

The meeting was attending by the following:
  1 Prof. Kameshwar Prasad Convenor
  2 Prof. Subhash Kaul
  3 Prof. M.V.P. Srivastava
  4 Dr. S. P. Gorthi
  5 Dr Uppal
  6 Dr Rohit Bhatia
7 Dr. J.B Sharma (Special attendee)
  8 Dr Srijitesh (Special attendee)

The discussion centred on the draft of the National Guidelines for Stroke Management. This was a follow-up discussion following a similar discussion on the draft in June 2007 in AIIMS, New Delhi and September, 2007 in Mumbai (during IAN conference).

The meeting started with a presentation by Dr Srijitesh, in which he highlighted the main differences between our draft guidelines, AHA guidelines and Royal College of Physicians of London guidelines on stroke management.
  The following decisions were taken:
1 We need to highlight the need to have a 'geographically defined' stroke unit.  Two or three levels of stroke unit (for example, primary and comprehensive as in AHA) may be identified as options.  This part will be developed further by Prof. Prasad and Prof. Kaul and Dr Gorthi.
2 We need to update the IAN guidelines on thrombolysis and incorporate in the final guidelines.  This will be developed by Prof. Kaul and Prof. MVP Srivastava.
3 Hemicraniectomy part may be developed further by Dr. Rohit Bhatia and Dr Gorthi.
These works will be completed by end of December, 2008.  After this final form of the guidelines will be circulated to all members of IAN and submitted after correction, if required, to the Executive Committee of IAN for approval.
